Adult Dragon Boat Programs

The Thames River Paddling Club’s adult dragon boat programs offer a welcoming, inclusive, and community-driven environment for individuals of all experience levels. Rooted in our mission to promote wellness, teamwork, and a love of paddling, our programs are designed to support personal growth, foster connections, and ensure that everyone feels a sense of belonging on and off the water.

All practices are held at the beautiful Wildwood Conservation Area, and all necessary equipment is provided—making it easy for you to get started and fully enjoy your experience. Whether you are looking for a fun fitness activity, a social team environment, or a competitive challenge, we have a program for every level and interest.

We are proud to be an inclusive club and welcome all adults (18+) to join us, regardless of background or experience.

Please note that members registering in a full-season program will be asked to complete a volunteer bond, helping to support the club and its events.


Introduction Program – 3 Weeks!  

The 3-Week Introduction Program at the Thames River Paddling Club is the perfect way to discover dragon boat paddling in a welcoming, supportive, and community-driven environment. Aligned with the club’s vision of inclusivity, fun, and personal growth, this program is designed for anyone curious about the sport and looking to try something new.

If you’ve never paddled before and are unsure if it’s for you, this program is a great place to start. It includes three dragon boat practices where you will learn the basics of paddling, build confidence on the water, and connect with other participants—followed by one full day of racing at the Wildwood Dragon Boat Challenge, where you’ll experience the excitement and energy of competition firsthand. Practices will run on Mondays May 4, 11 & 18, 2026 from 6 to 7 p.m.

No experience is required, and the program is open to anyone 18 years and older. At the end of the 3 weeks, participants are invited to continue their journey by joining the Recreational Program at a reduced cost.

Paddle For Fitness Program  

The Paddle for Fitness program at the Thames River Paddling Club offers a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals looking to stay active while enjoying time on the water. Aligned with the club’s commitment to community, inclusivity, and personal growth, this once-a-week program is designed for those who want to experience the benefits of dragon boat paddling without the commitment of racing. Practices will run on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. from June to September.

Participants will enjoy fun, fitness-focused practices that promote overall well-being, teamwork, and skill development in a safe and encouraging setting. Whether you are new to paddling or looking to complement your fitness routine, Paddle for Fitness is a great way to stay active, connect with others, and experience the energy of a dragon boat workout ot Wildwood Conservation Area in St Marys, Ontario.

Registration fees for this program are $150 and like all our full season programs, participant are required to complete a volunteer bound.

Recreational Program

The Recreational Dragon Boat Program at the Thames River Paddling Club offers a fun, inclusive, and community-focused way to enjoy a full season on the water. Aligned with the club’s vision of fostering connection, well-being, and a love for paddling, this program is perfect for those looking to stay active while being part of a supportive team environment.

If you are interested in joining for a full season, our Recreational Program practice run on Wednesday evening from May 6 to September 16, giving you the opportunity to build skills, improve your fitness, and fully experience dragon boat paddling. Whether you are new to the sport or returning for another season, this program will teach you how to paddle while creating lasting connections with fellow members.

No paddling experience is required, and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join.

Competitive Program

 

The Competitive Dragon Boat Program at the Thames River Paddling Club is designed for motivated paddlers who are ready to challenge themselves, grow as athletes, and contribute to a strong, team-oriented environment. Aligned with the club’s vision of inclusivity, community, and excellence, this mixed-gender program offers a structured and supportive pathway to elevate both individual performance and team success.

Running from May 4 to September 16, 2026, practices are held twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. In addition to scheduled dragon boat practices, paddlers will have access to the club’s OC boats through a sign-up process. Competitive paddlers are expected to be on the water a minimum of three times per week, whether in a dragon boat and/or an OC, to support their development and overall performance.

Through this program, participants will deepen their technical skills in dragon boating while building a strong connection with the water. Paddlers are encouraged to draw connections between OC paddling and dragon boat technique to enhance stroke efficiency, balance, and overall paddling ability.

This program also includes clear expectations for off-water training. Participants are expected to engage in regular physical and cardio workouts outside of scheduled practices to build strength and endurance, ensuring they are well-prepared for on-water sessions, races, and in-club competitions.

Throughout the program, participants will embark on an exciting journey where they will:

  • Refine paddling technique and stroke efficiency
  • Build strength, endurance, and overall fitness
  • Develop race strategies and competitive mindset
  • Strengthen teamwork, communication, and crew cohesion
  • Experience the excitement of dragon boat racing and club events

This program is ideal for paddlers who are committed, driven, and eager to be part of a supportive and high-performing team environment.
